It is estimated that, in the middle of the nineteenth century, the district was inaugurated with the aim of indigo cultivation. Nilkuthi, who founded them, is still witnessing this. Though it was known as the Thana of a large population from the British period, later the three police stations were formed in the name of Shibpur, Monohardi and Belab.
