The demand for the independence of Bangladesh is very old. On 21 February 1952, the unarmed independent Bengalis, unarmed, fell into the blood of the first Pakistani ruling group. Bengalis show their way of living with language, and the way to achieve the demands. Then 71 steps away from various stages. The final victory came in the war of 1971.

But Shaheed Minar is the symbol of language movement. To memorize the martyrdom of the language martyrs, on 23rd February, the memorial monument was constructed in the premises of the Medical College hostel, which later became known as Shaheed Minar. There is also a long history behind this martyr minaret.

In contrast to the pages of history, it is known that Pakistan has been divided into language demand since partition. About 99 percent of East Pakistan's people were Bangla But the Bengali people became protesting on the accusation of imposing the Urdu language on Bangla speaking people.

Protests started in November-December 1947 for the demand of language, but in March 1948 the movement took shape, which was released on 21 February 1952. On that morning, the students of Dhaka University came out of the streets after disobeying Section 144 and police fired on them. In this, several students and youths including Abul Barkat, Abdul Jabbar, Abdus Salam were killed.

The protesters gathered at Dhaka Medical College hostel. In spite of various tortures, the common man came back to the streets again on February 22, the next day to protest. They took part in the Gayee Janazah for the martyrs of the medical college hostel premises.

To memorize the memory of the language scholars, on 23 February, a monument was built on the premises of the Medical College Hostel in the night, which the government would have broken on 26 February.

The first Shaheed Minar was constructed in an immediate decision, unexpectedly. The Dhaka Medical College students started the memorial monument in the afternoon on 23 February 1952 and completed it in the night. The news of Shaheed Minar was sent to the paper on that day. 'In the memory of Shaheed Bir' - This title was printed in the daily Azad newspaper of Shaheed Minar.

The minaret was made on the east side of the medical student hostel (barracks) number 12. The street in the middle of the hostel. The purpose is to be easily seen from the outer street, and from any shade it comes out of the way while standing on the long stretch of the road.

The Shaheed Minar was 10 feet high and 6 feet wide. Under the supervision of the minaret, GS Sharfuddin (known as Engineer Sharfuddin), designed Badrul Alam. Saeed Haider was accompanied by Saeed Haider.

They assisted two masons. Cement was brought from the warehouse of the brick, sand and piru sardar of old Dhaka for the extension of medical college. After dawn, the minaret is covered with a cloth.

Shahid Shafiur, father of February 22, inaugurated Shahid Minar informally on 24 February morning. On February 26, the daily Azad secretary Abul Kalam Shamsuddin inaugurated the Shaheed Minar at 10am. On the opening day, police and army surrounded the hostel of medical students and broke the first martyr monument. Then a Shaheed Minar was constructed at Dhaka College, which was also broken down after the government's order.

After the recognition of Bangla as the state language of Pakistan, the work of the Central Shaheed Minar in 1957 started. Construction was completed in 1963, Vice-Chancellor of Dhaka University Professor. Under the supervision of a committee formed under the leadership of Mahmud Hossain.

In the year 1956, during the Chief Minister's rule, the foundations of the central Shaheed Minar were selected and laid down. The then Purna Secretary (minister) Abdus Salam Khan finally selected a place for establishing the foundation stone of 'Shaheed Minar' in the premises of the Medical College hostel.

On February 21, 1956, the foundation stone of this memorial was established with Basiron, a six-year old boy of Shaheed rickshaw driver Awal. Under the initiative of Sher-e-Bangla AK Fazlul Huq, the United Front government under the Awami League celebrated Ekushey February in 1956 spontaneously throughout East Pakistan.

Famous painter Hamidur Rahman has been identified as the architect of the martyr of the great language movement, Shaheed Minar. In November 1957, the construction of the Shaheed Minar was started in the revised form under the direct supervision of his own concept and Novara Ahmed.

This design included a wide area of ​​front facade of the Dhaka Medical College hostel. On 21 February 1963, the new Shaheed Minar was inaugurated by Hasina Begum, mother of Abul Barkat, one of the martyrs of Language Movement.

It is to be noted that on November 17, 1999, the Paris session of UNESCO was declared as the International Mother Language Day on February 21, and since February 21, 2000, the day is celebrated in UN member states with appropriate status. Shaheed Minar is a symbol of remembrance in honor of the martyrs.
